A black weekend for Southwark?

A massive weekend of matches for Southwark City Tennis Club with huge thanks to our fantastic captains Bola, Martin, Andrew, Dean, Debi, Julia, Darrel and Carlos.  In terms of results it was not a good one with 7 losses and only a solitary win.  However, there are a huge number of positives with lots of players making their debuts and learning how to compete at a higher level.

Starting with the good news Debi's boys 12U team of Maceo, Harry, Tarique and Hamish were far too strong for Woking running out 5-1 winners to consolidate their position at the top of the league.

In the adult matches Carlos was not able to field his strongest team but Junior, Randolph and James Lush stepped in to take on Grafton's first team.  Despite a win for the captain we were eventually well beaten going down 5-1.  Darrel was leading the second team due to yet another holiday for Martin, but again we just had a solitary win from Anselmo to show for our efforts against Telford Park.  However, Dean & Darrel pushed their doubles into a tie breaker while it was great to see Niyi going full out.  In a fantastic performance for the team, and despite two match points, Niyi eventually lost out 12-10 in the decider in his singles.  The women's team were reinforced by Andrea from the junior squad who together with captain Julia had fantastic wins in the singles.  Going into the doubles at 2-2 versus Westside 3 we made the decision to split our two strongest players to partner Jackie and Polly.  Unfortunately, we lost the two doubles but it was a really encouraging performance.

The younger juniors took to the court with our U8 red team travelling to David Lloyd Raynes Park to take on their second team.  The team of Shiv, Bvumaiishe, Lucas and Fiona went down 15-1 but the score did them no justice as many of the matches were decided on the odd point.  Our second red team played at GMH Park and it was great to see two Rebecca and Lila from this venue compete.  Jubril, Alexander and Joshua made up the team.  We had an epic battle with Virgin Active Surrey but went down 9-7.  Big kudos to Jubril and Fiona who are both playing brilliantly at just 5 years of age.  Lastly our two Orange 9U teams had tough assignments at the National Tennis Centre against ACTA and Tennis England all the way in Esher.  Our first team of Mathew, Hikram and Augustine could not cope with the strong Tennis England squad.  Against the Annabel Croft team Maria, Dorothy, Kleone and Fitzroi went down 7-1 but had a great time practising on the beautiful courts.
